  • Two Movie Reviews -- 2012 and Rebellion (同門)

Saw two movies in the last 48 hours.  48

    2012

I was lucky to get a ticket to the premiere of 2012, starring John Cusack.  The premise of the movie (no surprise given the movie posters) is that the world will come to a catastrophic end on 12/21/12.  Although lots of people get killed (come 'on, the world ends!), the movie makers make a point to not show graphic violence (e.g., blood; limbs ripped off; etc.).  Even without blood and gore, I was surprised to find myself kind of nauseous at the idea of the world coming to an end.  Watching familiar cities like LA and DC get obliterated kind of made me sick to the stomach.  Very weird since I knew (I hope!) this was just a movie.

Obviously, the whole movie is not believable (unless you indeed subscribe to the notion that the world will end in two years' time).  The movie highlights the environmental crisis that our planet faces and serves as a vehicle to show off Hollywood's latest and greatest CGI effects (which were cool but not orgasmic).  I did particularly enjoy the performances by
Chiwetel Ejiofor and Thandie Newton.  The relationship between Chiwetel's character in the movie and his father did get me all choked up on more than one occasion.  All in all, I say "go see it".

Like some of Hong Kong's premieres these days, all people entering had to surrender their cell phones and cameras and there was a silly made-for-show security presence.  I, for one, managed to sneak in my cell phone by swallowing it outside the theater.  Getting it back out was not the most pleasant thing in the world but I did request extra butter on my popcorn.

    同門 REBELLION

同門 is the 5,434,889th film made about Hong Kong's triad underworld.  In a story that spans a single night, you get your usual not-so-tough guys talking tough, women dumbing themselves up (one poor actress' only scenes in the movie were either performing fellatio, riding, or getting f-ed by her sponsor, who likes to have sex every moment he is not talking triad business or hacking other people to death), and unrealistic street fighting scenes (50+ men killing each other with metal pipes and watermelon knives in the middle of the street and no police show up).

One of the most hilarious scenes in the movie was when two triad henchmen were "talking business" in a club.  In the background is a stripper doing her thing against a stripper pole.  It was SO obvious that this girl had never seen a real stripper before and for some reason, it seemed that none of the males on set had either.  This girl was gyrating like she was a Turet's sufferer in lingerie and I completely lost focus of the main actors in the scene because I was too distracted by her convulsions (yes, convulsions!).

A shout-out goes to two AnD artists whom I saw in the movie -- AnD founder Conroy Chan and the multi-talented Jun Kung.  There might have been more but I couldn't identify them.  Conroy and Jun play triad henchmen and I thought they did a pretty nice job with their characters.  Jun is super-duper fresh in the movie and I loved the a**hole that he plays.  On more than one occasion, you just want to reach out and smack him.  Conroy is the reluctant triad middle manager who puts family above all else.

I like Shawn Yue but they kind of make him retarded in this movie.  (Excuse the term but that's what they did).  His character's supposed to be the up-and-coming star in the triad society but any time anyone asks him a question, his response is "I don't know".  He says "I don't know" about 50 times in the movie.  I guess it must have been intentional...

Two nice twists -- movie is not set in TST or Causeway Bay and the ending (i.e., the "who done it?" moment) is refreshing.

"Worth watching but wait for the DVD."

The Story of Dai Keung

OK...so I have been MIA forever.

My first blog in a long time is about the cockroach living in my kitchen.

The Chinese slang for cockroach is 小强 ("Little Strong").  Over the last few nights, I have realized why this name is so appropriate -- cockroaches are amazingly resilient creatures.

To be different and b/c the roach in my kitchen is anything but small -- almost three inches tip-to-tip -- I am calling him 大强 or "DK".

DK and I were introduced to each other about four nights ago.  The meeting was somewhat unusual considering it is now mid-October and the humid weather that roaches love so much is but a thing of the past.  So to say the least, I was surprised when I first saw DK.

DK has been hanging out in the narrow crack between my washer/dryer unit and the wall.  The space makes it very hard for me to get weapons into.  That is why I have not had much success killing DK.

    Night 1
DK and I did not start out on good terms.  I was not happy to see DK the first night, sprawled out against my wall like he owned the place.  I love my kitchen and take pride in keeping it nice and clean.

I tried shooting DK with a rubber band.  The first one missed and the second one nicked him but  despite a glancing blow, DK did not die and quickly ran back behind the washer/dryer.

    Night 2
There is a reason why cockroaches are the most successful creatures evolution has ever known.  Since Night 1, DK had already learned not to crawl out so much from the crack to expose himself to my flip-flop.  I swear on my life that the thing knew exactly where to stand.  I walked in the kitchen but could not get off a clean shot with my flip-flop or my rubber bands.

    Night 3
DK again hung out at the exact place on the wall where I could not smack him.  So instead, I changed tactics and decided to spray the sucker.  Since I do not have environmentally unfriendly DDT at home, I had to settle for Dettol Anti-Bacterial Spray.  I got close the first time but didn't get a solid hit.  My second spray was more substantial but DK still managed to scurry away unscathed.

    Night 4
Last night, DK was bolder and actually crawled into my recycling bin to relish some of the leftover beans I had had on vegetarian Monday.  I rinse everything before putting it in the recycling bin but I guess roaches have a better developed sense of smell and taste than us humans.  Again, evolution-suited DK sensed my presence.  I came into the kitchen as slow as a tortoise with a flip-flop in one hand and the Dettol in the other.  But before I could get close enough, DK picked up my presence with his ever-moving antennae and he ran away before I could spray/wack him.  Fxxker is taunting me.  I swear.

    Night 5
I'm sitting here waiting.  DK is on the wall but he is too far in to smack.  I've given up with the rubber bands b/c the chances of success are too low.  DK is slowly moving out from the crack at the rate of about one cm per hour.  Perhaps tonight is the night.  I'm testing my patience against a roach's!  How pathetic.

    ********************

It's very disturbing to have a roach in the house.  I can't even sleep well at night b/c I always imagine DK will take revenge while I'm sleeping (like crawl on my face or something).

    ARG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  It's driving me nuts.

OK.  Gotta go send DK to meet his maker.  Wish me luck.

    Dez

I was featured in September 15, 2009's Sun Paper.  My last interview in Oriental Daily had me "pinned beneath" Fala Chen.  This time, I was stuck beside a gyrating Angelababy.  Life can be worse, I guess.  I digress...

In the article, I give props to a favorite of many -- Stephen Chow.  I admire 星爺 (nickname Grandpa Sing) because his sh*t is so original and timeless.  Looks fade, trends change but good humor sticks around forever.  There are kids on the street these days who were not even born when the first Stephen Chow movie came out but who can recite his movie lines at the drop of a dime.

  • My Chance "Encounter" with Ms. Fala Chan

    *****************************

    Hey Everyone:

I've been the KING of no-blog.

Anyway, here's a quick one -- more a photo than a blog.  I appeared in the Entertainment Section of last Friday's Oriental Daily.  The paper talked about my dream of seeing people be more polite to each other and my inspiration for starting a consulting company that does exactly that (www.njtrf.com).

What I found most satisfying about the article was that I was "pinned beneath" the very beautiful Ms. Fala Chan, of whom I am a huge fan.  Although I didn't get a chance to introduce myself, I did brush shoulders with her at last night's premiere of "Turning Point".

More blogs to come...including the much anticipated (and by now anti-climatic) end to the McDonald's Challenge.

    Best,

  • McDonald's Challenge Goes International! Part 1 of 3.

I'm happy to announce that the McDonald's Quarterly Challenge has gone international!!!

For the first time ever, this contest was conducted on the same day in two countries!  While most of us were chowing down here in Hong Kong, the winner from last quarter's contest, "B", competed from Boston.  (More later...)

What started off as a silly high school antic has now attracted the attention of millions!  OK, not really.  But we did have a few more contestants and many more fans this time, which made the competition a lot more fun.

Let's get right to it!  For those reading about this contest for the first time, here's some background:  What Drives People to Do Stupid Things with Their Bodies.

    MEET THE CHALLENGE

On the menu this quarter, the super-tasty (but super heavy) Filet-o-Fish!

    MEET THE CONTESTANTS

No, it's not Dragon Ball Z...it's AnD artist Rob Lok!  He's brought with him his American appetite .

    My bro "D".

My buddy "T", who had to play catch-up cause he was a half hour late.  Better late than never!  You don't want to miss this!

"Me, Myself, and A Whole Lot of Fried Fish!"

First-EVER female contestant (takes guts, LITERALLY) and AnD artist Jo Jo Yee!  You're da bomb, Jo Jo!!!  (In case you're wondering, we weren't making Jo Jo sign a legal waiver ; that piece of paper's the contest rules.)

    One last group shot...

    And we're OFF!!!

    LIFE AFTER FEDERAL PENITENTIARY

If you want to see how people eat after being locked away in federal prison for 10 years, then you don't want to miss this...

The first few were easy and we were hungry!

    Count-off after about 15 minutes...

"T" arrives late and has some catching up to do.

Rob's serious about winning and sets out on a monstrous pace.  He also employs an interesting "scaffolding/Chinese well" counting system to effectively psyche out the competition.

Jo Jo's eating...but is she enjoying it?

    Yuuummmm...for now!!!!!!!

This was still early on...BEFORE the manager came over to see what the raucous was all about.

Things get serious and it's starting to hurt!

Desperate times call for desperate measures.  "T" starts using the dip-bread-in-water trick at around burger #6.  I double-fist after burger #8.

    "D" at #7.

Without telling you the final score at this point, I must give props to Rob.  This dude's a champ!  He finishes 10 burgers about 75 minutes in and is watching the competition trying to catch up to him.  In these photos, Rob attempts #11 as the competition starts to close in.  He also employs the dip-bread-in-water method to reduce the size of the bun.  Some of us can only watch...

After being idle for almost 30 minutes, "D" and "T" both jump back to life and put on the pressure.

Here's our leader.  Can he maintain his lead?  Is that a look of pain?  Or a smile indicating that he knows he's got the field beat?

    STAY TUNED!

Thank you Desmond. I didn't got into the pilot programme. Their standard is still so high for me to reach. There is another way, but it will take a lot of cash and amount of time for me to earn the flying hours for the direct job entry.
For now, I'm studying part-time on computer I.T. while working during daytime.

Anyway, I enjoy reading your blog about DK haha.. It really is so funny.. Hope to hear more updates. =)

    Anyway,
