Woke up this morning and received a message from a friend that got me to think about the effect time has on passion.  Passion is like a fire, a raging urge to engulf, to consume, to give, to sacrifice, to rise above the mundane and the routine, to be stronger and brilliant for the sake of someone, something, or some cause.  Passion is like the spark of a match, intense and agitated, a friction that can turn phosphorus and wood into a burning flame.  The question that struck me this morning is, how do you keep the match burning?

On the surface, it looks like a lost cause.  The brittle wood that makes the match stem can only burn for so long.  A slight breeze can easily kill a flame without shelter.  Angle the match the wrong way as it burns, the fire will not consume enough nourishment and die on the broken stem.

In love, friends are always talking about how great their "honeymoon" period was and that after some time, their relationship settles. They still "love" their partner, but not like they once did.  That passionate love that compelled them into love has become a habit, a comfort, as if they are moving forward only by the momentum left from the passionate flame that has long since turned into embers and ash.

In this uphill battle where nature and nurture seems to frown upon a lasting flame, what is it inside us that can help us remember, maintain, and nurture the flame that defines us?  There is no easy answer to this question.  And certainly there are no grand, verbose theories that can be of any use here.

Embers and ash retain the flames potential and can burn once again with the wind.  When we are all so consumed with our daily responsibilities and the trials and tribulations of our lives, we just need to remember to take some time for ourselves away from the fray.  Take a deep breath feel the embers inside glow and radiate an energy once forgotten.  Nurture the muses of our passion and allow ourselves to be wild, simple, and free if just for a moment.

It is important for all our us to nurture our flame.  Without which we are at the mercy of inertia, like particles drifting aimlessly in space.  For a life that threatens to have no greater purpose, our faith rests in that we believe there is more and that a tiny spark can turn common elements into something beautiful, brilliant, and worth living for.

it looks like everyone got your thought and faith...great ..so do i ..
all the things you said make me recognize that we are all helpless ,simple like infant..
we all desire something called forever.
but don't feel too disappointed. no one can afford to be passionate 24/7.mundane and routine let us more enjoy and cherish the brilliance of occational passion. u want to free yourself to be wild and simple...i don't know ..
indulgence or losing yourself ... maybe i care too much..anyhow..
the most important , wish u happiness..

    Ciao  Terrence:

I am unsure if its your blog or the coffee or the humidity  that triggered a restless night.

My thoughts are plentiful after reading your blog. ..... fire, passion, consume, breeze, match burning etc. All these words are tossing like jelly beans in an airtight container.  Will let them settle one by one before i spill my thoughts to U.

Heard it is your special day! Have fun!  Will keep in touch.

    ciao: olive

A friend of mine once told me that a person learns the most when he is falling in love and out of love.  Sometimes more is to be learned when they are falling out of love because the euphoria of being in love is a distraction to the growth process.

Having just gotten out of a relationship, I know that it was not for a lack of passion or what we call "in love."  Sometimes after the "in-love" state fades or starts to die we quit the relationship looking for the next match.  However, each match still has ash which can be made into soil which eventually turns back into wood.  I don't believe flames go out, I think that they just need time to recycle.  But if one does not have the patience to see a new match form, it's easier to go back to the box.

The same goes for work, fun, and even things we hate.  At some point everything is designed to reignite.

    so are you really living?

or still trying " to rise above the mundane and the routine, to be stronger and brilliant ----for the sake of someone, something, or some cause."

    who do you live for?

Thanks for the note. My sis and I had a great time in Vegas just bonding. Time really goes by fast! I hope we can have a reunion sometime in the near future. I think of you often and hope you are well. Best of luck and love.

T:  Your writing is still as emotive as ever.  We had this discussion the last time I visited when I was in a down time and now I've never been happier.  It definitely takes work to "nurture our flame" where inertia is the biggest foe.  I think for many, it's tough because they don't have enough self awareness.  You're obviously have a deeply reflective mind which makes sense since you're one of the most passionate people I know.  Bravo!

"our faith rests in that we believe there is more and that a tiny spark can turn common elements into something beautiful, brilliant, and worth living for." that's beautiful... well put but the beginning half of that sentence I'd have to challenge... because there is and can be a greater purpose to this life... then just living for ourselves :)

don't worry, Stephen and Patrick still have passion for each other,  even though some times it looks like their love has burned out.

I think if it's a match, you can't keep it burning forever...just as passion. But just like fires, you can always ignite/kindle passion again; it's a matter of working at it...unless I'm wrong. Deep thoughts Terence!!!

we do and we pursue because we know we cannot live without. because we have the ability to laugh at what once made us cry. because we have no choice, and we wouldnt have it any other way.

but perhaps thats just me. im a romantic, haha.
